A Foot In The Door For Legal Online Casino Action?

Added: Oct. 24, 2016

The idea of the proverbial ‘foot in the door’ is most definitely one interpretation on what is going on in the state of New York with respect to legal online gambling. Most likely you remember the idea of the foot in the door in which the acceptance of one idea leads to a much smoother acceptance of another similar idea.

That is what quite a number of online gambling proponents are hoping for with the recent legislation in the state of New York. Perhaps you recall the back and forth over the last year over this issue. In fact, none other than the New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman pulled the plug on both DraftKings and FanDuel. Keep in mind that DraftKings and FanDuel are in fact the largest Daily Fantasy Sports operators in the entire United States. Anyway, the point to recall is that Attorney General Schneiderman issued his Cease and Desist order earlier this year declaring that Daily Fantasy Sports are just another form of gambling and there illegal under New York statues.

Thankfully for the residents of New York, the state legislators took a good hard look at the topic of Daily Fantasy Sports. The result is that the New York state legislators came up with a Bill agreeable to all that was signed into law by the Governor. You may have seen the numerous press releases on this groundbreaking new law was signed into law on August 3rd of this year.

Which naturally brings up the next most logical question. The question of which, if any, additional online gambling legislation could show up next in the state of New York? Although it is certainly true that online gambling proponents would prefer to see the full passage of everything online gambling related, that may take a bit of time.

Consider that the law authorizing legal daily fantasy sports betting is based on the contention that daily fantasy sports betting is a game of skill. With that in mind, it would seem obvious that the next online gambling that might stand a chance of passage is that of legal online poker. Interestingly, the New York State Senate only recently passed a Bill that would authorize online poker. That being said, understand that there are still quite a few remaining steps along the way before online poker is legal in New York.

So what does all of this mean? Will the recent passage of legal online sports betting be but the first step towards full legalization of online casino action in New York? Or will that skill based concept restrict online gambling? Naturally it is too soon to predict the outcome. Nevertheless, online gambling proponents remain hopeful.
